Sand for water treatment is a filtration medium used to remove suspended solids, turbidity, and particulate matter from water. It is typically composed of high-purity silica with uniform grain size, ensuring effective physical filtration. In this process, water flows through layers of sand, usually with gravel at the bottom to support the sand and aid drainage. As the water passes through the sand, larger particles like dirt, debris, and other impurities are trapped in the sand grains, while cleaner water emerges from the bottom.

There are two main types of sand filters:

1. Slow sand filters – where water moves slowly through the sand, allowing for both physical filtering and biological processes to help purify the water.

2. Rapid sand filters – where water passes through more quickly and mainly relies on physical filtration, often needing pre-treatment like coagulation and flocculation.
